About Orthodontics

Your dentist may have already discussed with you the benefits of having healthy teeth and a proper biting relationship. Crowded, crooked teeth are difficult to clean and maintain. This can lead to "gingivitis" (swollen, red gums) and even "periodontal disease" (involving bone loss). An improper biting relationship may lead to additional problems including premature wear of the teeth and/or "TMJ" (jaw-joint) issues. TMJ issues may involve headaches, neck and even shoulder pain! For most of us, the most benefit of having orthodontic treatment is a beautiful smile! "Dr. Pincofski makes it easy to have braces. Before you know it, they are off and your teeth look great!"

HOW ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT WORKS

Orthodontic appliances are designed to place a constant, GENTLE force acting in a specifically guided direction, to SLOWLY move teeth into their correct positions. Braces can be silver, gold or clear. In addition, you can personally choose the colored ties which connect the wire into the braces (we have non-colored ties too!) Brace Painter

Clear Aligner Therapy (produced by many companies including Invisalign) is also available. However, it must be noted that aligner therapy does not move teeth in the same manner as braces do. Therefore, it is not recommended for every orthodontic problem. Aligner Therapy involves a series of custom-made aligners, each one designed to be worn for 2-4 weeks before proceeding to the next. Although aligners are removable, they must be worn full-time in order to be effective. This technique often involves "slenderizing" teeth (removing enamel) in order to create needed space.

BRACES: WHY SO MANY KINDS?

There are many different systems of braces available on the market today. Many of these systems are quite new and are making claims that have not been proven by LONG-TERM studies. The efficiency of the appliances that Dr. Pincofski uses have been verified by long-term research to deliver gentle, low-friction forces in order to safely move teeth.

DURATION OF TREATMENT

Treatment time varies from person to person because the complexity of the problem, as well as the corrective treatment, are not the same for everyone. Also, a child's growth rate plays a role. One of the most critical factors in determining the length of treatment is the patient's cooperation level! Broken braces, missed appointments, and non-cooperation with rubber bands all serve to lengthen the treatment time.

Because we believe that protecting the health of our patients and staff is priority number one, we comply with all guidelines established by the American Dental Association, The Center for Disease Control, The American Association of Orthodontists, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) with regards to sterilization and protective barriers between patients and provider. These measures provide protections against infectious disease including AIDS and hepatitis. Our staff is always available to answer your questions concerning infectious disease control.
